What should I wear? Possibly the #1 question in the photography world. Ha! Forget that, probably the #1 question we ask ourselves every morning. Well, I am hoping today I can help you answer this question and make your life easier when planning for your photo session.

Be YOU!

This may blow your mind, but the first suggestion I have when putting together your outfits is to make sure you are being YOU! This doesn’t mean that since you rarely wear dresses to not wear a dress. This means to wear a dress that fits you and your style. However, don’t force kids to wear things they just don’t want to wear. Make sure clothes are comfortable, especially for the kids and husband. At the end of the day, what really matters is you are you! Make sure you find clothing that you like and feel AMAZING in! We will capture the best photos of you if you are comfortable and feel good about yourself.

Create Movement

Something to think about when planning what to wear is if your clothes or hairstyle, etc, creates movement. Moms and daughters, this will mainly fall to your outfits. Dresses are wonderful for creating movement. Your hair down is also a perfect way to provide movement. Think about flowy cardigans with jeans if you don’t like wearing dresses. I also tend to lean more to clothing that is loose fitting, which is also going to create movement.

Let’s Coordinate

When you put together an outfit, you want to focus on everyone looking good together, not everyone matching. Your photos will look outdated if everyone is wearing the same colored shirts. It can be helpful to have 1-2 colors to tie everyone together, but not necessary. Keep in mind that patterns are fun, but more than 1 or 2 can be distracting. Also, patterns and textures are two different things. It is best to a mixture of solids, patterns and textures. Leave the neon and sport shorts behind.

When thinking about the colors you want to incorporate, think earth tones. Browns, greens, yellows, oranges, blues, creams, and reds, but the earthy versions of those colors. Below are two color palettes for inspiration:

Plan Ahead

Right after, or even before you book a session, be planning what you want to wear. Don’t wait until the night before. That just adds unnecessary stress and don’t forget that beauty sleep the night before. ;) And use me, I am here to help and more than happy to give suggestions! (Pinterest has some great ideas too!)

Layers and Accessories

Layers and accessories can add so much and a photo session is the perfect time to pull out some special jewelry or fancy shoes. Layers are fun to have to stay warm or if it is getting a little too warm, it can allow you to peel some off and give some variety in your wardrobe. Think about sweaters, cardigans, hats, boots, tights, vests, dressy coats, etc.

Alright, let me know if you would like help planning your session.
