I created this planning guide to help you know what is most important when preparing for your in-home newborn photography session.

I tell all my parents to make sure baby is fully fed and has a fresh diaper before I arrive.

The session is going to go much smoother if baby is comfortable. I am sure this is obvious, but yes, a baby fully fed and having a fresh diaper are the two most important things to do before I come to your home. Even though I schedule time for diaper changes and feedings, it is best to get a good start, so we are not 20 minutes in and I still haven’t started taking any photos.

Newborns should wear a simple outfit or just a diaper, but wrapped in a blanket.

When you plan out what you want your newborn to wear it really is up to you. Just remember to keep it comfortable and simple. Onesies, sleepers, diapers and linen blankets are all great options for baby. I have seen little sweater rompers that are pretty cute too. Whatever you do choose, make sure it is formfitting, with no graphics or words. Keep it neutral or earthy colors and if it has any patterns, make sure they are simple. ALSO, KEEP A SECOND FAVORITE AS A BACKUP in case baby poops or spits-up all over their first outfit.

Family should wear simple clothing that is comfortable and neutral or earthy colors.

Don’t let what your family should wear overwhelm you or become complicated. A simple jean and t-shirt combo would work great. Mom can wear a loose fitting dress or shirt with leggings. The biggest thing is you are comfortable and feel good. When planning colors, stick with neutral and earthy colors. Avoid neon and sport shirts/pants. Check out more about WHAT TO WEAR.

Do your best to pick up in the areas where photos are to happen.

When I ask you to do some pick up in the area where photos are going to happen, I don’t mean you need to be down on your hands and knees scrubbing the floors. Just do a little pick up, make the bed, shove things in a closet or slide them under the bed. No judgment here. I can't wait to help you plan your session and photograph your baby(ies)!

Photos will take place where natural light is the best in your home around 10am.

After you book your session, we will talk about the best places to take your photos and where you get the best natural light in the late mornings. But, this is something you may want to think about and notice before photo day. However, don’t stress about this too much either. I am going to walk through this with you and maybe even have you send me a couple phone photos of those areas.  Some of the most common places to have photos done in your home is in a bedroom, living room and the baby’s nursery. I usually do photos in 1-3 rooms. It is really going to depend on lighting. So, tell me, which room in your home gets the best lighting?
